About the Author
I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, surviving being sent away to live in boarding school for most of the year from the age of nine and WW II. I was educated at Charterhouse, one of the top five British schools, and at King's College Cambridge, where I began my study of medicine. I graduated with the equivalent of an American MD in 1954. All my pre-graduate and most of my postgraduate training as a pathologist was in the UK. In 1958 I immigrated with my young family to the USA, completing my requirements for certification by the American Board of Pathology in 1960, the year I became a member of the medical staff at the Beverly Hospital in Beverly MA. I was Chief Pathologist from 1972 to 1988, retiring fully in 1997. In 1998 we moved to the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
I became attracted to the problems associated with investing in the stock market in the early 60s, as I had identified that many similarities existed between the mental act of making a diagnosis as a pathologist, and that of making a decision to invest in a particular stock or mutual fund. In pathology, one has to be correct close to100% of the time if one wishes to avoid malpractice litigation. It is this need for certainty that is the undoing of the performance results of many physicians when they tackle the stock market.
Since my results were distinctly mediocre, I decided to learn everything I could about the whole process of investing to see if I could achieve any degree of mastery. I had embarked upon an adventure which has captured and held my interest ever since. I have been a student of the market for 45 years and have immersed myself in its voluminous literature. Indeed I've made some contributions of my own with two books describing market systems, two involving option strategies, a survival manual and study guide to trading S&P futures and options, and my last publication an e-book, Taking Your IRA to the Next Level, published by Traders Press.

Foreword:
I cut my teeth in the stock market in late 1972. I bought two stocks
that had tremendous fundamentals and I knew they could do nothing but go
up. In fact they did go up fairly quickly and I was thinking how smart
I was and how easy this was. Just after the first of the new year (1973)
things changed. The stock market and in particular (it seemed) my two
stocks began to plummet. This was not a problem because I also did
not ever think of setting a stop loss or including any money management techniques
to protect myself; besides I knew that I was right and the market must be
wrong. By the end of 1974 my two stocks were down over 65%. Being
one of the smartest people in the world had vanished from my mind two years
prior.
Being an engineer, I knew that I had done due diligence and thorough
research. What
happened? I decided there had to be a better way. I read a book
written by Michael Zahorchak, called, “The Art of Low Risk Investing.” This
book presented a technique called technical analysis to me and at the same
time made so much sense. I devoured the book and every Sunday afternoon
I would chart about 50 stocks, the New York Stock Exchange Composite Index,
and the advance decline line along with 5, 15, and 40 week moving averages
of each. Calculations were with a hand calculator and charts were on
graph paper using red, blue, and green pens. Technical analysis had
won me over and I realized that the market is never wrong.
Here it is over 30 years later and I am still immersed in the field of
technical analysis. I have developed technical analysis software,
written two books, participated in a number of television interviews, developed
indicators and trading systems, given countless presentations, and currently
manage money using a technical model.
What has changed and what have I learned after all this time spent in this
field? Computer technology has made the analysis quicker and more in
depth. The internet has made the analysis broader. The number
of books on the subject has gone from just a handful to hundreds and hundreds. There
are some things that have not changed, only moved to a higher location in
my list of priorities. Discipline and money management were things
I never once gave a thought to years ago – and most of my investing
portfolios proved that. These are the two things that I think most
investors still struggle with and probably the root cause of most of their
failures at investing. Isn’t it interesting that most believe
they really have no direct relationship with technical analysis?
While discipline and money management are not directly related to technical
analysis, they fall squarely in line with it. Why? Technical
analysis is the one methodology that makes the transition from analysis to
action fairly easy. Once you do your analysis with technical methods,
the discipline to follow them and the ability to use money management techniques
seem to fall in lock step with each other. Good technical analysis
yields good discipline. Technical analysis closes the gap between
analysis and action.
Most investors could use a good book on how to supercharge their retirement
accounts. There are many books on this subject but probably none written
by someone more capable and thorough than Humphrey Lloyd. I read Dr.
Lloyd’s book, “The Moving Balance System,” in the early
1980s and still use a variation of that indicator today. Dr. Lloyd
comes with so much credibility that I’ll buy anything he writes,
but you can find that out yourself by just turning the page.

"The fact is that we are each responsible for the fate

could only be provided by a man with first-hand experience of what it takes
to succeed. Dr. Lloyd builds from a solid foundation that introduces the
mechanics of Tax-deferred accounts and basic investment vehicles which culminates
in specific guidance on employing advanced technical analysis strategies.
Excellent guidance is provided on setting up portfolio allocations, managing
position size and managing gains/losses. From decades of experience and research
Dr. Lloyd provides a concise compilation of the most proven and time-tested
strategies as well as techniques that are still unknown to the vast majority
of investors. The entire book is peppered with insightful wisdom on the psychology
